How it works

Validate Shopify Variant Barcode values in bulk

The most common barcode problems in Shopify CSVs come from Excel, not the products themselves. Excel auto-formats long numeric barcodes into scientific notation (e.g. 5.01234E+12), adds decimal points, or strips leading zeros from EAN-13 codes starting with 0. This validator catches those spreadsheet-introduced mistakes and flags barcodes with unusual lengths before they reach Shopify.

Barcode format checks

Non-empty barcode values must be numeric and should match common retail barcode lengths.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about Shopify barcode validation.

Excel changed my barcodes to numbers like 5.01234E+12. Can this fix them?

That is scientific notation from Excel auto-formatting long numeric values. The checker flags those cells. To prevent it in future, format the barcode column as Text in Excel before pasting values, or open the CSV in Google Sheets instead.

My EAN-13 barcode starts with 0 but Shopify shows it shorter. Why?

Excel strips leading zeros from numeric columns. The barcode should be 13 digits but Excel saved it as 12. Always store barcodes in a Text-formatted column to preserve leading zeros.

Does it validate check digits?

The checker focuses on numeric format and standard length (8, 12, 13, or 14 digits). Check digit validation is not included because many internal or supplier codes use non-standard formats intentionally.

Are blank barcodes errors?

No. Blank barcodes are allowed because many Shopify catalogs do not use barcodes for every variant.
